Retaining wall in a garden being inspected for condition

Know what's really happening behind your wall

A measured condition review that looks past the surface, with a written plan for what to do next.

The promise

You'll come away with a clear, measured picture of your wall's condition and a written plan for reinforcement where it's actually warranted — with honest notes on which observations can reasonably be left as they are for now.

The problem

A garden retaining wall can look sound for years while pressure builds behind it unseen. Bulging courses, open joints, leaning coping, or damp staining are easy to notice and hard to interpret on your own — and it's understandable to want a second opinion before deciding what, if anything, needs doing.

The solution

We record wall height, batter, coping condition, and joint openness, and measure bulging against a string line rather than by eye. Where access allows, we open a trial hole at the base to establish footing depth and check whether a drainage layer is present — since its absence is the most frequent cause of pressure behind a wall.

The experience

The review covers walls up to 1.8 metres in height and 20 metres in length. We walk the wall with you, explain what we're seeing as we go, and follow up with a written cross-section drawing that sets out the wall as built and as proposed.

The investment

¥4,400

  • · Measured condition notes with photographs
  • · Cross-section drawing, as built and as proposed
  • · Specification for backfill, drainage, and reinforcement
  • · A staged approach spread across seasons if useful

The proof

The trial hole and string-line measurements give us something concrete to base the specification on, rather than a visual impression alone. Realistic timelines are set out with the plan, so you know what's urgent and what can be scheduled for a future season.

The guarantee

If our review finds the wall is sound and reinforcement isn't warranted, we'll tell you plainly — that's part of what the review is for. There's no obligation to commission further work.

Next steps

Send us a message describing what you've noticed and roughly how long the wall is, and we'll arrange a visit.
